Cecily meets Magda, the founder of Studio Mag, two hairdressing studios based in the East end of London. She tells us about the hairdressing industry, how she dresses for work, and what creativity means to her.

Cecily: How did you get here? Where did you start?

Magda: I was working in the city, I didn’t speak English that well and I had a customer that asked me what I wanted to do in the future and I said that I wanted to set up a salon by myself. Everything happened at the right moment, my customer helped me and we have been working for over 10 years together, we have two salons in the city.

Cecily: What is the hardest thing about your job?

Magda: For me, the hardest thing is pleasing the customers, they need to leave the shop with a smile on their faces. It is hard because you have so many different types of people, they all have different styles, so it is hard to match their style. I look at every aspect of their style, when someone is more classic I can’t recommend anything too trendy.

Cecily: Would you say your industry is more male or female led?

Magda: Not any more, now more men are starting to look after themselves, some come in every two weeks so that they look fresh and nice. I think the market has changed a lot.

Cecily: What about people who work in the hair industry is it better to be a man or a woman?

Magda: For me, it doesn’t make a difference. When I was studying hairdressing there weren’t very many male hairdressers. Before, I thought that being a hairdresser wasn’t anything special, but now it has changed a lot because you style the customers and you give them a good customer service.

Cecily: When you say hairdresser, what do you think that people think of?

Magda: At the moment, I think it is quite on trend to be a hairdresser. A person needs to have taste and style and without a sense of style you can’t recommend anything to the customers. People need to feel reassured by you as their hairdresser. I keep an eye on the current trends [on the high street] so that I know what the customers want to make them happy.

Cecily: How do you dress for work?

Magda: I need to feel something about what I am going to wear. I just do what I feel in the moment. I like to mix things, I like to stay trendy but not too trendy. People judge your hairdressing skills on what you are wearing, they trust you if they like your style, so how I dress is very important to my work.

Cecily: What does creativity mean to you?

Magda: It means to feel things and trust my opinion and knowledge.

Cecily: What does a successful woman look like in your mind?

Magda: There are so many successful women and they are not all in the office, they are more creative. I think the reason I am successful is because I am doing something I love.

Cecily: What do you think is the biggest difference between men and women in the workplace?

Magda: I think, in general, women are more responsible in what they do. Women are incredible humans, they are mothers which is the hardest job, they have been doing it forever and I think that says enough. It is a big responsibility being a woman, and being a mother is the biggest responsibility and to be a mother you have to be a woman.
